The essentials
  1. Check for excess weight remove litter above the raised Fill Line (roughly 8–10 lbs) and empty any un-emptied waste clumps sitting in the Globe.
  2. Press Reset the right way press firmly and quickly without leaning on the unit, and watch for the blue light to confirm the re-baseline.
  3. Power-cycle if Reset doesn't clear it unplug and replug the base to force a fresh weight measurement.
  4. Deep-clean the Globe regularly buildup inside the Globe pocket skews the baseline weight and causes repeat faults.
Before you start
  • The control panel light is flashing red, not solid a steady red light is normal — it just means a cat is inside the Globe.
  • It doesn't stop on its own the flashing continues even after your cat has left the Globe.
  • No app alert on the base unit unless you own the Wi-Fi-enabled Connect base, there's no phone notification — just the light itself.
What this means for your pet

Your cat can still use the box, but cycles aren’t reliable. Scoop once by hand today so waste doesn’t sit in the globe overnight.

Why the red light keeps flashing

A flashing red light is not a hardware failure — it's the Cat Sensor reporting that its weight reading has stayed above baseline for too long. Two ordinary situations trigger it far more often than a genuine fault.

Cause 01

The Cat Sensor's baseline logic

At power-on and at the end of every cycle, the unit takes a baseline weight measurement of the Globe. It then watches for an increase — a cat entering — followed by a decrease — the cat exiting — to start the Cycle Delay countdown. If the reading never drops back down, the sensor assumes something is still inside, and after 30 minutes it switches from solid to flashing red. Cats need to weigh at least 5 lbs to reliably trip it, and lightweight litters such as corn or wheat may need extra weight to activate it.

Cause 02

Excess litter or waste weight

Too much litter above the raised Fill Line — roughly 8–10 lbs — or an accumulation of un-emptied waste clumps in the Globe can read as a permanent "cat present" state, even with no cat inside. Weight resting on the Step or Step Mat alone will not trip the sensor, so the extra weight has to be inside the Globe itself.

In most cases, the steps below clear it in under a minute.

How to clear the cat sensor fault

Work through these in order — most owners clear it at step 1 or step 2, and never need to go further.

Part A — Clear the fault now
Part B — Prevent it from coming back

Keep the sensor accurate

Wiping down the Globe and Base regularly keeps clumped residue from quietly adding weight the Cat Sensor mistakes for a cat.

If the issue persists: replacement options

If you've cleared the excess weight, pressed Reset properly, and power-cycled the unit without success, the fault is unlikely to be a defective sensor — it almost always comes back to weight or buildup. The two products below cover the ongoing maintenance that keeps it from recurring: wiping down the Globe and Base, and a proper deep clean of the Globe itself.

If the light keeps flashing right after a clean Reset and power cycle with no excess weight present, that points toward a sensor or base issue worth escalating to WhiskerCare rather than continuing to troubleshoot on your own.

Advanced: the Whisker app and edge cases

Two details are worth clarifying before you assume something is broken.

Does the Whisker app send a notification for this?

Only if you own the Wi-Fi-enabled Litter-Robot 3 Connect base — the upgrade that adds phone notifications. Whisker's own troubleshooting article for this exact fault mentions app alerts, but the standard Litter-Robot 3 manual has no app or Wi-Fi section at all.

If you own the base (non-Connect) unit, don't expect a phone alert — the flashing light on the panel itself is your only signal, so it's worth checking on the unit periodically rather than waiting for a notification that will never arrive.

What if my cat genuinely won't leave the Globe?

That's a behavioral or medical situation, not a hardware fault, and it's outside the scope of what a Reset or a clean can fix. If you notice a pattern of a cat lingering in the Globe — especially if it looks reluctant to leave or shows other changes in litter box behavior — it's worth mentioning to your veterinarian rather than continuing to troubleshoot the unit itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Litter-Robot 3 flashing red?

The Cat Sensor has been continuously activated for 30 minutes or more, either because a cat won't leave the Globe or because there's too much weight sitting inside it. Clearing the excess weight and pressing Reset resolves it in almost every case.

How do I reset the Cat Sensor on my Litter-Robot 3?

Press the Reset button firmly and quickly, without leaning on the unit, and watch for the blue light to flash — that confirms the sensor has taken a fresh baseline reading. If the red light keeps flashing afterward, power-cycle the base.

Is a solid red light on my Litter-Robot 3 normal?

Yes. A solid, non-flashing red light just means the Cat Sensor has detected your cat inside the Globe. Once the cat exits, the Cycle Delay countdown to the next Clean cycle begins on its own — it only becomes a problem if it starts flashing.

How often should I deep-clean the Globe to avoid Cat Sensor faults?

Every one to three months per the manual, or every three to six months per Whisker's own troubleshooting guidance — the two sources differ slightly, so lean toward the shorter interval with more than one cat. Buildup inside the Globe pocket is what throws off the baseline weight.

Conclusion

A flashing red light is the Cat Sensor asking for a weight check, not a hardware failure in most cases. Clear excess litter or waste, press Reset the right way, and power-cycle if needed. If it keeps happening right after a clean Reset with no excess weight, that points toward a sensor or base issue worth escalating to WhiskerCare.

Still not fixed? Here’s what to do next.

Some faults are genuinely hardware, and no amount of cleaning or resetting will clear them. If you’ve worked through everything above and it’s still doing it, stop here rather than taking the unit further apart.

  • Go to Whisker (Litter-Robot) directly. If the unit is still under warranty, let them replace the part rather than paying for it yourself — contact Whisker (Litter-Robot) support.
  • Tell us what didn’t work. We rewrite bulletins when readers show us a case they don’t cover — compliance@pet-infrastructure.com. Tell us the model, what the lights are doing, and which steps you already tried.
  • Ask other owners. r/litterrobot is active and full of people who have had the exact same fault on the exact same model. Search the sub before posting — the answer is often already there.

When to stop and call the manufacturer: if the fix needs the base opened, the motor or control board touched, or any tool beyond a screwdriver — stop. On a unit in this price range, opening it yourself usually voids the warranty, and a warranty repair costs nothing.

How this page was put together. Every light code, button sequence and timing here is traced back to Whisker (Litter-Robot)’s own documentation, to official support articles, or to several owner reports that agree with each other — and the guide tells you which. Where something genuinely isn’t documented anywhere, I say so instead of filling the gap.
