Why a clean pinch bar doesn't always stop the trip

Cleaning the pinch bar and the two metal contacts resolves most fast-flash cases, because the Anti-Pinch feature relies on a clean, direct metal-to-metal connection to register correctly. When that connection still fails after cleaning, it's usually one of two things happening at the contacts themselves.

Cause 01

Corrosion too deep to clean off

A light film of corrosion wipes away and restores contact. But when the metal underneath has been pitted or oxidized over time, wiping only removes surface residue — the contact surface itself is no longer smooth and conductive, so the trip keeps recurring even after cleaning.

Cause 02

A contact bent out of position

The two pinch-detect contacts need to overlap and touch consistently as the Globe rotates. If one has been nudged or bent during a previous cleaning or reassembly, it can look perfectly clean and still fail to make a reliable connection.

Before assuming it's either of these, work through the confirmation checklist below — it takes a few minutes and rules out anything you may have missed.

While your unit is still covered by WhiskerCare, Whisker supplies replacement parts free of charge through your customer account. At $5 the saving is trivial, but the reason to check anyway isn't the five dollars: if what's actually broken is the plastic pinch sensor housing rather than the metal contacts, that's not a part you can buy. A forum thread documents exactly that case being resolved as a base exchange under warranty. So look at the housing before you look at your card — a cracked one turns a $5 order into a warranty claim.

The pinch contact is a low-cost, low-effort part, and it's worth replacing before assuming there's a bigger problem — especially on a Litter-Robot 3 that's a few years old, where corrosion on this part is common. Whisker sells it on its own, separate from the larger DFI kit, since it addresses this specific symptom.

Search for this part and you'll be handed five different names for it, sometimes on the same results page, and none of them explains that they're the same thing. That's how a $5 order becomes a $68 one. Here they all are.

Why the $5 part disappoints some buyers

Worth knowing before you order: the standalone Pinch Contact rates 4.1 out of 5 across 97 reviews, with 14 of them at one star, while the $30 Pinch Contact & DFI Kit rates 4.7 across 988. Both come from the same manufacturer, and the contacts in the kit are the contacts sold on their own — so the gap is unlikely to be about the metal. The most plausible explanation is that the cheapest part in the catalogue attracts people whose symptom it was never going to fix: someone chasing a Drawer Full light that won't clear needs the DFI board, buys the $5 part because it's five dollars, and rates it one star when the light comes back. Match your own symptom against the breakdown in section 06 before ordering, and the $5 part does what it says.


Can you bypass the pinch sensor?

Yes, people do this, and one of the top video results for this problem offers to show you how. It's a fair question to ask when a unit has been out of action for a week, so here's a straight answer rather than a silence.

A bypass means defeating the pinch-detect circuit — jumping the two contacts, or disconnecting them so the control board no longer receives a pinch signal at all. The appeal is obvious: the fast yellow flash stops, the Globe cycles, the machine looks fixed. Nothing has been repaired. What's changed is that a detection circuit has been made permanently silent.

What that circuit does is the reason not to. On a Litter-Robot 3 the pinch contacts are what tell the unit to stop the Globe and reverse it when something is caught between the Globe and the base. The thing most likely to be caught there is a cat — a paw, a tail, or a cat that has climbed in mid-cycle. That is the entire purpose of the part. A unit with the sensor bypassed will keep rotating into an obstruction instead of stopping and reversing, and it will do so silently, because the mechanism designed to catch that is the one you disabled. The unit's motor over-torque fault is a separate system with a separate trigger — it responds to a drive that can no longer turn, which is not the same thing as a pinch being detected, and it is not something to fall back on here. Whisker's own service documentation puts it plainly enough for a routine reassembly step: *"improper installation may negatively affect the operation of your Litter-Robot and/or its safety systems."* Deliberately disabling one is not an installation error, it's the same outcome on purpose.

So this bulletin doesn't publish the procedure, and that's deliberate. Not to be coy — the information is findable, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest — but because there is no scenario where it's the right answer. The part costs $5. Two bars, in a slot, reachable without a screwdriver once the Globe is off. If a persistent fast yellow flash is genuinely making the unit unusable, the honest options are: repeat the free cleaning fix, replace the $5 contacts, or check the housing for a crack and open a warranty claim if it's broken. All three leave the safety system working, and the third one may cost nothing at all.

And for the few days between ordering and installing: scoop the Globe by hand and empty the waste drawer yourself, the way a conventional litter box works. It's tedious, it changes nothing about the unit, and the safety circuit stays where it belongs.


Advanced: picking the right part and what to do if it still trips

Two scenarios below cover most of what comes up after you've decided to replace this part.

Pinch Contact ($5) vs. Pinch Contact & DFI Kit ($30) — which one do you need?

Buy the $30 kit only if your symptom is a Drawer Full alert that won't clear even with an empty drawer — that's a different fault covered in our Drawer Full Indicator guide. If Anti-Pinch is your only symptom, the $5 part is the correct, cheaper buy.

Anti-Pinch still triggers after you've replaced the contact

If a fresh pinch contact doesn't stop the trips, the sensor is probably reporting correctly — something is actually catching the Globe's rotation. That points to a mechanical jam rather than a sensor fault: clumped litter buildup, a liner bunched at the tracks, or debris caught where the Globe meets the base.

The fast yellow flash that never clears at all

There's a version of this fault that behaves differently from the one everybody writes about, and it's covered almost exclusively in videos rather than in text: the fast yellow flash is there from the moment the unit is powered on, and no cycle, no Reset and no cleaning changes it. It isn't tripping during rotation — it's permanently in the tripped state.

Read that as a circuit that never closes properly rather than as a Globe that keeps catching. Three things to check in that order, all of them free: that both contacts are fully seated in their slot with the upper and lower ones overlapping, which is Whisker's own reassembly requirement and easy to get wrong after a cleaning; that the two black wires on the pinch terminals are still attached and not pinched or pulled off; and that the plastic housing holding the contacts isn't cracked. The first two are why a unit that was fine before a cleaning can flash permanently after one. The third is not a $5 fix — a broken housing goes down the warranty route in step 0, and a forum thread documents that exact case being settled as a base exchange.


Frequently asked questions

How many pinch contacts come in the pack?

Two. Whisker's $5 Pinch Contact ships as two contact bars, and RobotShop's equivalent is listed explicitly as a 2-pack. So the $5 covers the pair, not one bar — you don't need to order two.

What is the part number for the Litter-Robot 3 pinch contact?

Depends who's selling it. Whisker lists it by name as the Pinch Contact; RobotShop uses MPN LR3PINCH with SKU RB-Ltr-107; a third reference, LR34009, appears on listings that call it a Contact or Pinch Sensor. Those are three references for the same $5 part, and the glossary in section 04 lines them up.

Are Anti-Pinch Pins the same as the Pinch Contact?

Yes. "Anti-Pinch Pins", "pinch detect terminals" and "Pinch Contact" all describe the same two metal bars, and they're the same $5 purchase. The only term that means something different is "pinch bar", which is properly the plastic bar near the Waste Port you press during the free cleaning fix — that one isn't a part you buy.

Should I buy the $5 pinch contact or the $30 DFI kit?

Let the symptom decide. A recurring fast yellow flash, four times a second, is Anti-Pinch: that's the $5 Pinch Contact. A Drawer Full alert that won't clear on an empty drawer needs the Drawer Full Indicator board, which is only in the $30 kit. The kit does contain the pinch contacts as well, so if you have both symptoms — or you're opening the base for other reasons anyway — the kit is the better buy.

Can I bypass the pinch sensor on the Litter-Robot 3?

Technically it can be done, and at least one popular video offers to show you. Don't, and this bulletin won't publish the method. The pinch contacts are what stop and reverse the Globe when something is caught between the Globe and the base, and the something most likely to be caught there is a cat's paw or tail. Bypassing the circuit doesn't fix the fault, it deletes the warning — silently. Whisker's own service documentation warns that improper installation "may negatively affect the operation of your Litter-Robot and/or its safety systems", and that's for an honest mistake. The part costs $5, and if the housing is what's broken the warranty route may cost nothing.

Is it safe to buy a used pinch sensor on eBay?

There's no reason to. One listing sells it used at $55 plus $13.48 shipping with no returns accepted, against $5 for two new bars from the manufacturer — roughly 13.7 times the price. Beyond the money, corrosion is the main reason this part fails, so a used contact is somebody else's corrosion at eleven times the cost of new.

Why does my Litter-Robot 3 keep triggering Anti-Pinch with nothing blocking it?

After you've cleaned the pinch bar and both metal contacts and it still trips with no visible blockage, the contacts themselves are the most likely cause — either corrosion too deep to clean off, or a contact bent out of alignment so it no longer makes reliable contact. Check too that both contacts are fully seated in their slot and overlapping, and that the two black wires on the terminals are still attached.
