The essentials
  1. Check the litter level first litter above the raised MAX fill line is the number one documented cause.
  2. Zero the SmartScale with the Cancel button after leveling the litter.
  3. Open the unit and inspect the Globe, base, and motor for obstructions or visible damage if the weight check doesn't clear it.
  4. Run a motor test with the Globe removed to isolate a genuine mechanical fault from a false reading.
Before you start
  • Globe stalls mid-rotation the motor stops, the Globe retracts briefly, then tries again — and eventually gives up.
  • Blinking Red light the LED indicator light turns Blinking Red once the unit stops retrying.
  • "Overloaded Globe" in the Whisker app the app names the exact fault, sometimes alongside a motor warning.
What this means for your pet

Your cat may have no usable box right now. Cats that can’t get in will hold it or find another spot in the house — put a spare tray down before you start, so nothing depends on how fast this goes.

Why the globe is overloading

An overloaded Globe reading almost always traces back to one of two things: too much weight resisting the motor, or a physical obstruction in the rotation path. Genuine motor damage is real but far less common than either of these.

Cause 01

Too much litter, or litter riding the walls

Litter above the raised MAX fill line adds real resistance as the Globe rotates through a full cycle. Whisker lists this as the first thing to check — remove litter until it's just below the line and level the bed before doing anything else.

Cause 02

Something is physically jamming the rotation

A misaligned carbon filter cover, a loose motor cover, debris that missed the dump port, or genuine damage to the Globe — deep scratches, a separating seam, or a loose black gear track — can all resist rotation enough to trip the same Overloaded Globe error as excess litter.

Start with the litter level — it resolves the majority of Overloaded Globe reports without opening the unit.

How to clear it — step-by-step

Work through the weight check first. Only proceed to disassembly if the Globe still won't complete a clean cycle afterward.

Part B — Disassembly and inspection

Still overloaded after the weight check?

Time to open the unit and inspect the Globe, base, and motor directly.

If the issue persists: replacement options

If the motor test in step 6 fails to turn the Globe cleanly, or you found visible damage to the Globe, gear track, or motor assembly, this is a hardware fault — not something to force through with more cleaning.

For most owners the litter-level check alone resolves this — reserve the disassembly steps and WhiskerCare escalation for a Globe that keeps stalling after that.

Advanced troubleshooting & diagnostics

The Globe recovers on its own sometimes — is that normal?

Yes. If the Globe becomes jammed or overloaded during rotation, the motor stops and retracts briefly, then attempts to continue after a short pause — this is by design. If the Globe completes a Clean Cycle after that retry, the Control Panel returns to ready mode (Solid White) and the unit resumes normal automatic operation with no further action needed. You only need to intervene once the unit gives up after multiple failed attempts and the LED stays Blinking Red.

How is Overloaded Globe different from Obstruction Detected?

Overloaded Globe is a motor-side fault — the drive itself is meeting too much resistance, usually from excess litter weight or a mechanical jam. Obstruction Detected comes specifically from the two pinch bar sensors flanking the Waste Drawer chute reacting to something in the chute. Both display the same Blinking Red LED and both trigger a stop-and-retract cycle, so if clearing litter and checking the Globe doesn't resolve it, check the Obstruction Detected guide next.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Litter-Robot 5 say Overloaded Globe?

The most common cause by far is litter piled above the raised MAX fill line, which adds enough resistance to stall the motor. Level the litter, zero the SmartScale with the Cancel button, and run a test cycle before assuming a mechanical fault.

How do I fix a Litter-Robot 5 motor fault?

Start by checking the litter level and zeroing the scale. If the Globe still won't complete a cycle, power off, remove the bonnet and Globe, inspect for damage or a loose gear track, and run a motor test with the Globe removed to see whether the motor turns cleanly on its own.

Is Overloaded Globe covered under warranty on the Litter-Robot 5?

Genuine motor or Globe damage found during inspection — a separating seam, a loose gear track, or a motor that won't turn even with the Globe removed — is a hardware issue, and the Litter-Robot 5 is new enough that this should be raised with WhiskerCare support rather than repaired at home.

Conclusion

An Overloaded Globe error is almost always excess litter weight, not a broken motor — check the MAX fill line first and you'll likely be done in five minutes. If the motor test still fails after a full inspection, that's the point to loop in Whisker support with what you found.

Still not fixed? Here’s what to do next.

Some faults are genuinely hardware, and no amount of cleaning or resetting will clear them. If you’ve worked through everything above and it’s still doing it, stop here rather than taking the unit further apart.

  • Go to Whisker (Litter-Robot) directly. If the unit is still under warranty, let them replace the part rather than paying for it yourself — contact Whisker (Litter-Robot) support.
  • Tell us what didn’t work. We rewrite bulletins when readers show us a case they don’t cover — compliance@pet-infrastructure.com. Tell us the model, what the lights are doing, and which steps you already tried.
  • Ask other owners. r/litterrobot is active and full of people who have had the exact same fault on the exact same model. Search the sub before posting — the answer is often already there.

When to stop and call the manufacturer: if the fix needs the base opened, the motor or control board touched, or any tool beyond a screwdriver — stop. On a unit in this price range, opening it yourself usually voids the warranty, and a warranty repair costs nothing.

How this page was put together. Every light code, button sequence and timing here is traced back to Whisker (Litter-Robot)’s own documentation, to official support articles, or to several owner reports that agree with each other — and the guide tells you which. Where something genuinely isn’t documented anywhere, I say so instead of filling the gap.
