Why won't my smart pet device connect to wifi?
You've checked the password three times. Your phone is sitting on the same network, one room away, working fine. Everything else in the house connects without a fight. And your litter box, feeder, or pet camera still can't find the network — or finds it, then drops it an hour later.
The frustrating part is that it's usually not a defective unit and not something you're doing wrong. A lot of pet-tech hardware only understands one of the two WiFi bands your router broadcasts, and modern routers have gotten quietly good at hiding that band from view.
The real cause
Most low-cost WiFi chips built into smart home devices — litter boxes, feeders, pet cameras, and plenty else — only support the 2.4GHz band. It's slower than 5GHz, but it travels farther through walls and costs less to manufacture, which is exactly what a company selling a $500 litter box wants from a $2 radio chip buried inside it.
That would be a non-issue if routers still broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz as two separate, clearly labeled networks the way they did a decade ago. Most modern routers, and nearly every mesh system, don't do that anymore. They merge both bands under one network name and use "band steering" to automatically push your phone toward whichever band the router thinks is better — almost always 5GHz. During setup, that's a real problem: your phone can be sitting on 5GHz while the device you're trying to add can only ever see 2.4GHz, and the two never manage to shake hands.
Whisker's own support documentation confirms exactly this for the standard Litter-Robot 5: the unit is 2.4GHz-only, while the Litter-Robot 5 Pro was built to support both bands. That's not a guess — it's the manufacturer saying so in writing, which is more than most competing brands bother to disclose anywhere in their spec sheets.

Not every pet-tech WiFi problem is this exact issue, and it's worth being honest about which devices we can say this for with a straight face versus which ones are a reasonable guess.

That Sure Petcare row is worth pausing on, because it's tempting to lump every "smart pet device won't connect" complaint into one WiFi-band story, and that would be wrong. The Sure Petcare Hub's actual constraint is that it needs a live wired network connection within about 10 metres of the pet door — Sure Petcare has recommended a powerline (Ethernet-over-power) adapter for this since 2018. If your Hub is the one giving you trouble, a 2.4GHz extender won't fix it; a powerline adapter or a mesh node with a spare LAN port will. That's a genuinely different fix for a genuinely different constraint, not a variation on the same one.
The fix
If your device is one of the confirmed or plausible 2.4GHz-only cases above, you have two paths.
The free one: some routers let you split a merged network into two separately named ones — one for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz — in the router's own admin settings, so you can join the 2.4GHz network by name instead of hoping band steering picks the right one. Not every router allows this, and on some mesh systems the option is buried or missing entirely.
Where that's not available, or the device's location is genuinely too far from the router for a reliable 2.4GHz signal either way, a dedicated 2.4GHz-only extender solves it directly: it broadcasts its own small, uncluttered 2.4GHz network right next to the device, with nothing else competing for that airtime and no band-steering logic deciding which network your gadget sees.

Almost every router sold in the last several years does. The question that actually matters is whether it broadcasts them as one merged network name or two separate ones — check your router's admin settings for a "band steering" or "smart connect" toggle, which is usually what's merging them.
Why does my phone keep connecting to 5GHz when I need 2.4GHz for setup?
Because your router's band steering is doing its job — 5GHz is faster, so the router pushes capable devices toward it automatically. That's normally a good thing, and exactly the wrong thing during onboarding for a 2.4GHz-only gadget, which is why some routers let you temporarily split the bands or join the 2.4GHz name directly.
Will a 2.4GHz extender slow down the rest of my network?
No — a dedicated extender broadcasts its own separate network rather than competing with your main router's traffic, so it doesn't add load to whatever's already running on your primary WiFi.
