The three links between your flap and your phone
Before anything else: does your flap carry the Connect symbol? A Hub only talks to Sure Petcare Connect products, and a non-Connect flap will never pair with one no matter what you do to your network. It is the number one reason pairing fails, and it is barely mentioned anywhere — check the model on the flap itself before spending twenty minutes diagnosing a link that can't exist.
If the flap is a Connect model, then a "notification" is not one connection. It is three, in series, and each one fails differently:

This is the misconception that costs owners the most money. The Hub reaches your router over Ethernet and reaches the flap over its own radio, so "boosting the Wi-Fi" cannot fix a late notification on its own — there is no Wi-Fi hop to boost. Better Wi-Fi coverage only ever helps here indirectly, by giving you somewhere new to plug the Hub in. Phone speed tests next to the Hub tell you nothing about any of the three segments.
What the Hub's ears are telling you
The LED colours are the fastest way to place a fault on a segment, and Sure Petcare documents them across separate pages rather than in one table. Here they are together:

Three timings are worth knowing before you start pulling plugs, because guessing them is how people interrupt a firmware update: a power cycle means leaving it unplugged for 30 seconds, a factory reset is a 10-second press, and a firmware update can hold the Hub on solid red for up to 2 minutes.
Is 10 metres a hard limit?
No — it is a conservative link budget, not a wall. The manual advises within 10 metres and in line-of-sight where possible; at least one owner reports a stable link at around 13 metres through a floor. Both statements can be true at once: 10 metres in line-of-sight is what Sure Petcare is willing to guarantee across all the houses it can't see, and your particular walls may be kinder than that. Treat it as the distance to aim for, and as the number to fall back on when you're deciding whether distance is the problem. And note the capacity while you're here: one Hub handles up to 10 Connect devices, so a second Hub is not the answer to a crowded household.
When the problem is bigger than hub placement
If the three tests above put the fault on segment 1 or 2 — inside your house, not in Sure Petcare's cloud — and you've already moved the Hub within 10 metres of the Pet Door and away from interference sources, and you've already added the powerline adapter Sure Petcare recommends, then the cause usually falls into one of two categories.
No wired socket where the Hub needs to be
The Hub has to satisfy two constraints at once: an Ethernet cable back to your router, and roughly 10 metres or less to the Pet Door, ideally in line-of-sight. In a house where the router sits at one end and the Pet Door at the other — extra floors, thick walls, no network socket anywhere near the door — those two constraints pull in opposite directions, and repositioning alone can't satisfy both. What's missing is a live Ethernet socket near the Pet Door, which is exactly what Sure Petcare's powerline recommendation is meant to create.
A Hub that seems to be failing on its own
Some Hubs keep showing unusually slow, laggy notifications even with correct placement, line-of-sight to the Pet Door, and a stable wired connection through a powerline adapter. The ears stay solid green — which the manual defines as turned on, connected and working correctly, so no connection fault is being reported — but the delay never improves the way it should. That pattern points to the Hub itself rather than to its surroundings.

Confirm you've ruled out the free fixes
Sure Petcare's own troubleshooting starts with placement, not with buying anything new — it's worth confirming these three steps first, because they solve most cases at no cost. What the Hub needs is a live network socket near the Pet Door. Powerline is the cheaper route and the one Sure Petcare has recommended for years; a mesh node with a spare LAN port does the same job and fixes Wi-Fi coverage in that room at the same time.
Powerline, longer cable or a mesh node: giving the hub a socket
One thing to be straight about, because plenty of pages sell it as a discovery: "put a network socket near the door" is not a new idea, and it isn't ours. Sure Petcare has recommended an "Ethernet over power adapter" for exactly this situation on at least three of its own pages since 2018, and our companion guide already covers that powerline route. A mesh system is a modern variant of the same manufacturer recommendation, not a different diagnosis. So the real question isn't powerline *or* mesh in the abstract — it's which one puts a socket where you need it for the least money and the fewest new failure points.

If the Hub can't get within about 10 metres of the door because that's simply where your only Ethernet run ends, and a longer cable isn't practical, the powerline (Ethernet-over-mains) adapter is the route Sure Petcare's own support documentation points to first, and the cheaper of the two purchases. A mesh system such as the TP-Link Deco X20 (3-pack) solves the same problem from the network side and is the option that also fixes coverage: each unit carries two gigabit Ethernet ports with WAN/LAN auto-sensing, so a node sitting near the Pet Door becomes the wired socket the Hub needs. Note what neither of them is doing — they aren't putting the Hub on Wi-Fi, and they aren't strengthening the Hub-to-Pet-Door radio link; they're letting you move the Hub to a better spot. How do I know if it's the Hub or where it's plugged in?
A phone speed test next to the Hub won't tell you much here, because the Hub isn't on your Wi-Fi — it's on an Ethernet cable. The useful test is a temporary one: take the Hub and a long Ethernet cable, plug it straight into the router, and move it as close to the Pet Door as the cable will allow. If notifications sharpen up as the Hub gets nearer the door, the constraint is distance on the Hub-to-Pet-Door radio link, and what you need is a way to give the Hub a network socket in that spot — a powerline adapter, a mesh node with a spare Ethernet port, or a permanent cable run.
If the Hub is already close to the door, wired directly to the router, showing solid green ears, and notifications are still minutes behind, you've eliminated placement and the network path. The Hub itself is the more likely cause at that point — a new unit is the simpler fix.
Is there an official Sure Petcare Hub v2 I should wait for?
Sure Petcare's own catalogue lists a single Hub — the one referenced throughout this guide and our companion Sure Petcare Hub notifications guide — and we found no separate "Hub v2" listed by the manufacturer. If your existing Hub seems to be failing despite correct placement and a stable connection, replacing it with that same model, or giving it a wired socket nearer the Pet Door, are the two real options rather than waiting on a newer model.

How long should a Sure Petcare notification take to arrive?
Sure Petcare doesn't publish a target delivery time, so there's no official figure to hold yours against. In practice owners treat these alerts as near-immediate, and minutes of delay as a symptom rather than normal behaviour. What's more useful than a number is knowing where a delay can come from: one of the three links in section 01. If the Sure Petcare web app on a computer is equally slow at the same moment while the rest of your network is fine, the delay is on Sure Petcare's side — a public log documents about 23 minutes of surehub.io unavailability with 60-second timeouts and a perfectly stable local network.
Does the Sure Petcare Hub use WiFi or Ethernet?
Ethernet. Sure Petcare's product page states the Hub "plugs into your WiFi router using an ethernet cable (included)", and the manual tells you to run that cable into a spare Ethernet port on the router. The Hub then talks to your Pet Door over its own short-range radio, which is why the manual asks you to keep it within about 10 metres of the door and in line-of-sight where possible. Neither of those two links runs over your home Wi-Fi — which is why boosting Wi-Fi, on its own, changes nothing.
How far can the Hub be from the cat flap?
The manual advises within 10 metres, in line-of-sight where possible and roughly 1 metre off the ground. Treat that as a conservative link budget rather than a hard cut-off: at least one owner reports a stable link at around 13 metres through a floor. Aim for the 10 metres, and if you're beyond it, test by temporarily moving the Hub closer before assuming distance is your problem.
Will a mesh WiFi system fix slow notifications?
Only indirectly, and it's worth being precise about how. It won't put the Hub on Wi-Fi and it won't strengthen the Hub-to-Pet-Door radio link. What it does is give you a node with a spare LAN port near the Pet Door, so the Hub can be plugged in close to the door instead of stranded next to the router. That is the same goal as the Ethernet-over-power adapter Sure Petcare itself has recommended since 2018, and the powerline route is cheaper — try it first, and spend the extra on mesh only if you also want the Wi-Fi coverage. Check the node's ports before buying: many mesh satellites have no spare LAN port, or only a WAN port. And if the Hub is already close, wired and green, neither option will change anything.

Does the Hub work with a non-Connect cat flap?
No. The Hub only pairs with Sure Petcare Connect products, so a flap without the Connect marking will never appear in the app no matter what you change on your network. It's worth checking the model on the flap first, because it's the most common reason pairing fails and almost nothing says so plainly.
How many devices can one Hub control?
Up to 10 Connect devices. So a crowded household isn't a reason to add a second Hub, and adding one won't speed up notifications from the devices you already have.

Find the failing link before you spend anything. Of the three — flap to Hub over its own radio, Hub to router over Ethernet, router to Sure Petcare's cloud and on to your phone — only the first two are yours to fix, and the third will look exactly like a fault in your house while being nothing of the kind. Once you've placed the fault, the shopping decision is small: a longer cable if it reaches, the powerline adapter Sure Petcare has recommended since 2018 if it doesn't, a mesh node with a real LAN port if you want the Wi-Fi coverage as well, and a replacement Hub only when the Hub is in range, wired, green and still slow. The one thing worth remembering: the Hub is a wired device talking to your door over its own radio, so the fix is about where you can put it, not about how strong your Wi-Fi is.
