Heavy real-world usage

Multiple pets sharing one door, or a door on a high-traffic route in and out, means more locking and unlocking cycles per day. Each cycle draws on the motor. More cycles means more battery use — this is normal wear from actual use, not a fault with the door.

Lower-quality disposable batteries

The locking motor pulls a brief burst of current every time it moves. Budget alkaline batteries can lose capacity faster than better-quality alkaline cells under that kind of peak load, even if they read as "fresh" on a shelf tester.

Debris behind the white flap

This one isn't named as a battery cause in the manual, which is why it gets missed. Hair, dust and grit collecting behind the white flap can leave the door thinking a pet is present, so the microchip reader keeps scanning instead of settling back to standby. Scanning is what costs battery on this door, and a reader that never stops scanning will empty a fresh set well ahead of schedule — with no error, no clicking, and nothing visible on the LCD.

How long a set should last, and how many cells that is a year

Sure Petcare publishes no battery-life figure for the Connect models, which is why nobody can tell you whether your drain rate is normal. What does exist is a scatter of owner reports in public forum threads, and they cluster tightly enough to be useful as a rough yardstick. Read the table for what it is — owner reports, not a manufacturer specification — and use it only to decide whether your door is behaving like other people's.

The gap between the first two rows is the part worth understanding: a Connect door is doing work the older door never did — it keeps a radio link alive to the Hub so the app can tell you who came in. That is a real, permanent load, and it is why guidance written for the older door reads as wildly optimistic on a Connect one. Neither figure is a promise, and a household with three cats and a cat door on the kitchen route will land at the bottom of any range.

C or AA? Check which product you own

The two formats get mixed up constantly, including by shops and by search results. The SureFlap Microchip Pet Door — the large one, dog and cat — takes 4 × C cells. The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap takes 4 × AA cells. Batteries aren't included with either; Sure Petcare's own product listing for the Pet Door Connect says "4 x C cell batteries not included". Buying the wrong size is the most common wasted order on these products, so check the compartment before you check out.

If you sit at the 6-8 week end of that table, the running total is easy to work out and worth doing once: 4 cells per set, a set every 6 to 8 weeks, is roughly seven to nine sets a year — 28 to 36 individual C cells. That number, not the price of any single pack, is what makes owners start looking at rechargeables. The next section is about why that particular shortcut doesn't work here, and what does.


What sure petcare specifies, and where rechargeables stand

We looked for an official Sure Petcare mains adapter for this pet door and didn't find one: the accessory range lists tunnel extenders, mounting adaptors, replacement flaps, collar tags and the Hub, but no plug-in power option for the door itself. Battery power, 4 C cells, is the only supported option for this model.

Why the gauge and rechargeables fall out — the most likely explanation

Worth separating clearly, because the two things carry very different weight. What Sure Petcare states is short: alkaline batteries only. It does not publish a reason. What follows is the most likely explanation, and it is arithmetic plus a plausible mechanism rather than a manufacturer position — treat it as our reading, not as documentation.

The arithmetic is not in dispute. Four alkaline cells at 1.5 V nominal hand the door 6.0 V. Four NiMH rechargeables at 1.2 V nominal hand it 4.8 V — the same physical size, 1.2 V less, from the moment they come off the charger. A battery gauge has no way to count charge directly; it infers a percentage from voltage, against the discharge curve of the chemistry it was calibrated for. Calibrate that curve on alkalines and a full NiMH pack already sits below where the curve expects a fresh pack to be, and it stays flat rather than sloping the way an alkaline pack does. So the gauge reads a fully charged pack as partly gone, and keeps reading low all the way down.

Two publicly logged reports fit that reading, and they are the reason we think it holds rather than just sounding plausible:

  • A Sure Petcare device reporting a battery level of -6 % in a home-automation integration, with the owner explicitly stating the device was set to rechargeable mode.
  • A second report of -16 %, logged while the Sure Petcare app was simultaneously sending a "Low Battery" alert.

A negative percentage is the tell. It isn't a flat pack — a flat pack reads zero. It's a voltage falling outside the range the gauge was built to interpret, which is exactly what a 4.8 V pack does to a 6.0 V scale. Note what this does and doesn't mean: it is an argument about the gauge, not a claim that NiMH cells damage the door. The fire-hazard wording is the manufacturer's, on the Cat Flap Connect, and it stands on its own.

The practical consequence: on this door, the lever you actually control is battery *quality*, not battery chemistry. Good quality alkaline C cells of the kind the manual names — Energizer or Duracell are its own examples — hold up better under the brief current surge the locking motor draws each time it moves than budget cells do, even when both read as "fresh" on a shelf tester. If you are going through cells quickly in a multi-pet or high-traffic household, buying a known-good alkaline brand in bulk is the manufacturer-compatible way to cut the running cost. The manual names Duracell as one of its two examples, so a Duracell Coppertop C 4-pack matches the specification exactly — one pack is one full set for this door.

If you came here to stop throwing batteries away

Most people who search for rechargeable C cells for this door aren't chasing a technical improvement — they want to stop buying and binning 28 to 36 cells a year. That is a completely reasonable thing to want, and "the manual says no" is a poor answer on its own, so here is what's actually left on that front:

  • Cut the number of sets, not the chemistry. This is the one with real leverage. A door scanning on a loop because of debris behind the flap, or working harder because the sensors are dirty, can burn through sets several times faster than a clean one. Fixing that removes whole sets from the year — more than any chemistry swap could give back.
  • Replace by compartment, not by habit. If one side still reads healthy, you've been throwing away half-good cells. Step 4 above is what tells you.
  • Recycle rather than bin. Alkaline cells are accepted at battery collection points in most countries; check what your local authority or your supermarket operates rather than dropping them in household waste.
  • Don't borrow the older door's workaround. The non-Connect Microchip Pet Door's custom mode 2 does exist for rechargeables — on that model. If you own the Connect version, that mode isn't documented for it and the Connect range's own wording points the other way.

Advanced: battery choice and when it's not a battery problem

Two questions come up once a household has already cleaned the door and is still watching batteries disappear.

How long should a set of C cells last in this door?

Sure Petcare does not publish a battery-life figure for the Microchip Pet Door Connect — the manual only describes the low-battery indicator, a red flash next to the LCD screen. (The older, non-Connect Microchip Pet Door manual quotes "typical battery lifetime at least 6 months" under normal usage, but that figure belongs to a different model and a different battery setup, so don't read it across.) Run time depends heavily on household usage — number of pets, number of daily door cycles — so treat any specific interval you see online as anecdotal. The ranges gathered in section 03 are useful as a sanity check against other households, and they are labelled as owner reports for that reason. Tracking your own baseline, as in step 3 above, is more reliable than any general number.

Still draining fast after fresh alkaline cells AND a full clean?

At that point it's no longer a battery choice or a cleaning issue — a door that drains new batteries on clean sensors is more likely showing an electronics fault. The manual also flags a constant clicking sound as a symptom of faulty batteries, low-quality batteries, or poor contact between the batteries and the Pet Door, so check the contacts before you escalate. Then contact Sure Petcare Customer Care with your battery type, install date, and how quickly drain reappears; if the door is still under warranty, that's the better path than replacing batteries again — and it is one more reason to stay on the alkaline cells the manual specifies.

What batteries does the Microchip Pet Door Connect take?

4 good quality 1.5V alkaline C cells, and they aren't included — Sure Petcare's own listing says "4 x C cell batteries not included". The manual gives Energizer and Duracell as its examples of "good quality", and warns against mixing battery types or mixing new and used cells.

Does the SureFlap Pet Door use C or AA batteries?

The SureFlap Microchip Pet Door uses 4 × C cells. The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap uses 4 × AA cells. Search results and shop listings mix the two constantly, so check the compartment on your own unit before ordering — this is the single most common wasted purchase on these products.

Why does my SureFlap say the batteries are full when they are flat?

Because the indicator infers a level from voltage rather than measuring what's left, so it can be wrong in both directions.
