Sure petcare troubleshooting: find your issue fast
- Figure out which device is at fault first — the pet door itself, or the Hub.
- Pet door not reading chips, clicking, or draining batteries — almost always dirty sensors or contacts — a 5-10 minute clean fixes most of these.
- Metal doors can interfere with chip reading — — rule this out before assuming a hardware fault.
- Hub flashing red, clashing, or slow notifications — these are separate connectivity issues, not pet door problems.
- The pet door isn't reading your pet's chip reliably, or makes an odd noise.
- Batteries are draining much faster than expected.
- The Hub is flashing red, offline, or notifications are arriving late.
The door still works, but not reliably for every pet. Watch the first few passages after each step.
Why sure petcare issues look alike
A "not working" SureFlap system is usually one of two unrelated problems — the door itself, or the Hub it talks to — and telling them apart first prevents troubleshooting the wrong device.
Chip-reading failures have two causes
A pet's chip not being read can come from dirty optical sensors (a cleaning fix) or from a metal door interfering with the RF field (an installation fix) — they look identical but need different solutions.
"Offline" and "slow" are different Hub problems
A Hub stuck flashing red is a connection failure needing a factory reset. A Hub that's connected but sends notifications minutes late is a separate, milder issue — treating one as the other wastes time.
Identify the device first, then pick the matching card below.
Match your exact symptom
Clean the optical sensors and isolate the door from metal to fix both.
Repeated clicking noiseAlmost always the batteries or their contacts — a 5-minute fix.
Won't read the chipRule out metal door interference and RF noise before assuming a hardware fault.
Battery life too shortDirty sensors, draught excluders, or the tunnel floor are the top causes.
Suspect the Hub, not the door?
This is the exact Hub reused across the connectivity guides below.
If nothing above matches
If your symptom doesn't fit any category above, or a guide's steps didn't resolve it, the Sure Petcare Hub is the most commonly needed reference for connectivity troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it's the pet door or the Hub causing the problem?
Open the Sure Petcare app — it reports each device's connection status separately. If the door works locally (opens for your pet) but notifications lag, it's a Hub issue, not a door issue.
Why isn't my SureFlap door reading my pet's chip?
The two most common causes are dirty optical sensors and nearby metal (a metal door or frame) interfering with the reading field. Both are covered in dedicated guides above.
Is a flashing red Hub the same as slow notifications?
No. Flashing red means the Hub isn't connected at all and needs a reset. Slow notifications mean it is connected but struggling — a milder, different issue.
Do I need to reset the Hub or the pet door first?
Start with whichever device the app reports as having a problem. Resetting the wrong device wastes time and won't fix an issue on the other one.
Conclusion
Seven different Sure Petcare issues, two devices — this guide exists so you troubleshoot the right one first. Match your symptom to a card above and follow that guide's exact steps.
Still not fixed? Here’s what to do next.
Some faults are genuinely hardware, and no amount of cleaning or resetting will clear them. If you’ve worked through everything above and it’s still doing it, stop here rather than taking the unit further apart.
- Go to Sure Petcare directly. If the unit is still under warranty, let them replace the part rather than paying for it yourself — contact Sure Petcare support.
- Tell us what didn’t work. We rewrite bulletins when readers show us a case they don’t cover — compliance@pet-infrastructure.com. Tell us the model, what the lights are doing, and which steps you already tried.
- Ask other owners. Search Reddit for your model name plus the symptom (for example “Sure Petcare Hub & SureFlap Microchip Pet Door not cycling”). Someone has almost certainly hit the same fault, and owner threads often surface fixes before the manufacturer documents them.
When to stop and call the manufacturer: if the fix needs the base opened, the motor or control board touched, or any tool beyond a screwdriver — stop. On a unit in this price range, opening it yourself usually voids the warranty, and a warranty repair costs nothing.

How this page was put together. Every light code, button sequence and timing here is traced back to Sure Petcare’s own documentation, to official support articles, or to several owner reports that agree with each other — and the guide tells you which. Where something genuinely isn’t documented anywhere, I say so instead of filling the gap.
