The essentials
  1. New install mount the Anti-Tip Guard, attach the LitterHopper to the base and Bonnet, fill both reservoirs.
  2. Enable it long-press Cycle and Connect together for 3 seconds — the motor gives a brief confirmation spin.
  3. Blue/purple flash almost always means the panel can't detect the hopper — recheck the attachment, or disable hopper mode if you're not using one.
  4. Not refilling confirm your litter isn't translucent/crystal — it can throw off the level sensors.
Before you start
  • Blue and purple flashing together the Control Panel alternates blue and purple instead of showing a normal status color.
  • Just unboxed the LitterHopper you're not sure how it attaches, how it decides when to refill, or what litter it likes.
  • Litter level not topping up the hopper is full but the globe still looks low after cycles.
What this means for your pet

Your cat can still use the box, but cycles aren’t reliable. Scoop once by hand today so waste doesn’t sit in the globe overnight.

How the litterhopper actually works

It's easy to assume the LitterHopper just tips litter in on a timer. It doesn't — it reads the Globe the same way the rest of the Litter-Robot 4 does.

Fact 01

It refills based on sensors, not a schedule

After every clean cycle, the unit's sensors measure the litter bed height. If it's below the level that was "optimal" when you first enabled the hopper, it dispenses litter into the next cycle — up to 20 seconds per cycle, and it can span multiple cycles to catch up.

Fact 02

It's picky about litter type

Clay-clumping litter and fine beads pass through the hopper's screen cleanly. Translucent or white crystal litter is the one type Whisker flags — it can reduce the accuracy of the level sensors and the drawer-full indicator.

Whether you're installing one for the first time or chasing the blue/purple flash, the steps below cover both.

Setup, and fixing the blue/purple flash

Follow Part A if you're installing a new LitterHopper. If yours is already installed and flashing blue/purple, skip to Part B.

Don't have a LitterHopper yet?

It's an official Whisker accessory, sold directly — not a third-party part.

Where to get the litterhopper

The LitterHopper is a $129 official Whisker accessory, sold and warrantied separately from the Litter-Robot 4 itself (1-year coverage, independent of the unit's own warranty).

If setup is done and the flash is gone but refills still seem off, the recalibration steps below cover that.

Advanced: recalibrating & litter compatibility

Two follow-up questions come up once the hopper is installed and detected.

Recalibrating the optimal litter level

Whichever litter level is in the Globe at the moment you enable the LitterHopper becomes its "optimal" target — that's what it maintains going forward. If that baseline was set with too little or too much litter in the Globe, the hopper will keep chasing the wrong target. Disable hopper mode, adjust the Globe to the level you actually want, then re-enable with the same long-press of Cycle and Connect to reset the baseline.

Which litters to avoid

Translucent or white crystal litter is the one type Whisker specifically calls out: it can reduce the accuracy of both the LitterHopper's level sensors and the unit's own drawer-full indicator. Clay-clumping litter and fine litter beads that pass cleanly through the hopper's screen are the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Litter-Robot 4 control panel flash blue and purple?

It means the unit expects a LitterHopper but isn't detecting one — usually a loose attachment or debris blocking the electrical contacts. Recheck that the posts are seated in the base and the hook tab is locked into the Bonnet, or disable hopper mode if you're not using the accessory.

How do I fully reset the LitterHopper connection if it won't stop flashing?

Short-press Reset (the light bar flashes white, then goes solid blue), then long-press Cycle and Connect together for 3 seconds, then press and hold Reset and Connect together for 3 seconds. That fully disables hopper mode so you can remove the hopper, clear any debris from the motor area and attachment pockets, and reinstall it with no gap between the hopper and the base before long-pressing Cycle and Connect again to re-enable.

I've reinstalled the LitterHopper correctly and it's still flashing — now what?

Run a couple of test cycles first to rule out a fluke reading. If the flash persists after a clean reinstall with a fully seated Bonnet and no debris in the attachment pockets, treat it as a hardware fault and contact Whisker support — the LitterHopper carries its own 1-year warranty, separate from the Litter-Robot 4's.

Do I need the LitterHopper for the Litter-Robot 4 to work?

No. It's an optional accessory for automatic litter top-ups. The Litter-Robot 4 runs normally without one — you just refill the Globe by hand.

What litter should I use with the LitterHopper?

Clay-clumping litter or fine litter beads. Avoid translucent or white crystal litter, which Whisker notes can throw off the level sensors and the drawer-full indicator.

How much litter does the LitterHopper hold, and how fast does it refill?

About 13 cups. It dispenses in bursts of up to 20 seconds per clean cycle, and can spread a refill across several cycles if the Globe is well below the optimal level.

Conclusion

Most LitterHopper questions come down to one of two things: getting the initial attachment fully seated, or understanding that "optimal level" is whatever the Globe held the moment you enabled it — not a fixed factory setting. Get those two right and the accessory mostly runs itself.

Still not fixed? Here’s what to do next.

Some faults are genuinely hardware, and no amount of cleaning or resetting will clear them. If you’ve worked through everything above and it’s still doing it, stop here rather than taking the unit further apart.

  • Go to Whisker (Litter-Robot) directly. If the unit is still under warranty, let them replace the part rather than paying for it yourself — contact Whisker (Litter-Robot) support.
  • Tell us what didn’t work. We rewrite bulletins when readers show us a case they don’t cover — compliance@pet-infrastructure.com. Tell us the model, what the lights are doing, and which steps you already tried.
  • Ask other owners. r/litterrobot is active and full of people who have had the exact same fault on the exact same model. Search the sub before posting — the answer is often already there.

When to stop and call the manufacturer: if the fix needs the base opened, the motor or control board touched, or any tool beyond a screwdriver — stop. On a unit in this price range, opening it yourself usually voids the warranty, and a warranty repair costs nothing.

How this page was put together. Every light code, button sequence and timing here is traced back to Whisker (Litter-Robot)’s own documentation, to official support articles, or to several owner reports that agree with each other — and the guide tells you which. Where something genuinely isn’t documented anywhere, I say so instead of filling the gap.
