How fast it comes back tells you what broke

Before touching anything, note down how long the unit ran normally before the fault reappeared. That single number narrows the field faster than any other observation, and it is the piece almost nobody writes down.

A documented case: new motor on the 7th, faulting on the 11th

The clearest evidence that a recurring Litter-Robot 4 motor fault is not always a motor problem comes from a RobotShop community thread (thread 108973), where an owner records a motor assembly replaced under warranty on 7 October and the same fault returning on 11 October. Four days.

That timeline matters for one reason: a brand-new sealed motor and gearbox assembly failing in four days of household use is far less likely than the fault having been somewhere else the whole time. The current-draw threshold that trips the fault is monitored in the base, not in the motor — so a base that misreads that current, or a connector that adds resistance in the circuit, produces the same light bar as a worn motor, and keeps producing it however many motors you fit.

The practical rule

If a motor assembly you fitted yourself faults again within days, treat that as a diagnostic result, not as a bad part. The next money to spend is $0 — a warranty claim — not another $55.


A "dirty" fault vs. a "broken" fault

If you have already worked through the cleaning and reset steps once and the fault came right back, the question is no longer "how do I clear it" — it is "is this mechanical or electrical." The two cards below cover the two ways a Litter-Robot 4 motor fault turns out to be a hardware problem rather than a dust problem.

Cause 01

The drive pinion has slipped or worn out

With the bonnet and globe removed, look at the small white drive pinion gear on the motor shaft in the base. Try turning it by hand. If it spins freely on the shaft without engaging the large black gear ring on the globe, the pinion has physically slipped or worn down. Unlike the Litter-Robot 3, this gear does not tighten back down with a set screw — a slipped pinion means the sealed motor assembly itself needs to be replaced.

Cause 02

The motor does not respond at all

After a full clean and a proper Reset + Connect sequence, try a cycle with the globe empty of litter — no load, no resistance. If the motor stays silent and the globe does not move even a little, that points to an internal electrical failure rather than mechanical resistance. A motor that will not turn a completely empty globe has nothing left to "clean out."

Either sign means the checklist below is worth running once more to be sure before you spend anything — but if you already know the answer, skip ahead to the replacement option.


Confirm it before you buy anything

The free fix works for most Litter-Robot 4 motor and overtorque faults, so it is worth one more careful pass before ordering a replacement part. If the fault keeps returning: replacement options

Once the checklist above confirms the fault is not coming from dust, a loose motor connector, or a misaligned globe, the next step is a full motor assembly swap. The Litter-Robot 4 uses a sealed motor and gearbox unit — there is no individual bearing, brush, or gear sold separately, and no LR3-style set screw to tighten. Whisker sells the complete replacement assembly (part LR4-9008) directly for $55, for units that are no longer under warranty; if yours is still covered, Whisker supplies replacement parts through your account at no charge instead.

Where to look next: base, wire harness, main board

Whisker's support articles for a fault that will not clear name exactly two parts: the motor assembly and the base unit. Once the motor assembly is new, that leaves three candidates, and they are not equally accessible.

The carbon dust hypothesis — worth knowing, not a manufacturer position

An independent repair wiki describes a physical mechanism for recurring motor faults on these units: as brushes wear, conductive carbon dust accumulates on the motor's commutator, which raises the current the motor draws for the same mechanical load — and a current-monitored safety cut-out then trips on what looks like excessive resistance. It is a coherent explanation for a fault that returns on a schedule rather than randomly.

Treat it as a sourced hypothesis, not doctrine. Whisker does not describe this mechanism anywhere in its Litter-Robot 4 documentation, and the Litter-Robot 4 motor is a sealed assembly you cannot open to inspect a commutator without destroying the part you would then have to buy. Its practical value is narrow but real: if the fault reappears at roughly the same interval after each clean, that pattern fits progressive wear inside a sealed motor, and it argues for a warranty claim rather than another clean.


The warranty claim script

For a fault that survives a new motor, the warranty claim is the real exit — forum threads on this failure end there far more often than they end with a successful second part swap. Claims move faster when the first message already contains everything support needs, so gather these before you write:

  • The serial number of the unit, read off the machine rather than from memory.
  • The age of the unit and, if you have it, the purchase date — this is what decides between the standard warranty, WhiskerCare and out-of-warranty pricing.
  • The date the motor assembly was fitted and the date the fault returned. The gap between them is the single most persuasive fact you have.
  • A screenshot of the fault in the Whisker app, plus a note of the light bar state you are seeing — alternating blue and white for Motor Fault, red with flashing yellow for Overtorque Fault.
  • What you have already ruled out: guide rails and rear bearing pocket cleaned, drive pinion checked by hand, motor wire connector re-seated, Reset + Connect hard reset run, and a cycle attempted with the globe empty.

State plainly that the replacement motor faulted after a specific number of days, and ask them to look past the motor assembly — at the base and the board — rather than sending a third motor. Asking the right question is what turns a parts conversation into a unit-level fix.


Advanced: what a sealed motor replacement involves

Two things are worth knowing before you order the part, in plain terms.

What "sealed assembly" means for the install

Because the motor and gearbox come as one sealed unit, replacement means removing and reinstalling the whole assembly in the base — not opening it up and swapping a bearing or a brush. Whisker's own Litter-Robot 4 Motor Installation Guide calls for a Phillips-head screwdriver only: you remove the four screws holding the motor cover, unplug the single motor wire connector from the wire harness, swap the assembly along with its rubber upper and lower motor isolators, then reverse the process — without overtightening the screws on reassembly. Follow that guide rather than a generic teardown video; Whisker warns that improper installation can affect the unit's operation and safety systems.

The fault comes back even after replacing the motor

If a Motor Fault or Overtorque Fault shows up again on a brand-new motor assembly, the motor itself is very unlikely to be the problem twice in a row. Whisker's own support articles list two parts for a fault that will not clear: the motor assembly and the base unit. Once a new motor is ruled out, the base — which carries the electronics that monitor the motor's current draw — is the remaining candidate. That is outside what a Motor Assembly swap can fix, and it is the point to contact Whisker support directly rather than order a second part.

That is a load and friction reading, not a verdict on a component. It becomes a verdict on the part only once the resistance has genuinely been removed — rails and rear bearing pocket cleaned, clumps cleared, litter level reduced — and the fault still comes back within a cycle or two. Motor Fault (alternating blue and white light bar) works the same way: high start-up resistance, a communication error, or an encoder issue can all raise it.

What steps should be taken if the over torque fault persists despite troubleshooting?

Clean the guide rails and the rear bearing pocket, clear clumps stuck to the globe, reduce the litter level, check the drive pinion by hand, confirm the motor wire connector is securely seated, then run Whisker's hard reset — Reset and Connect held together for 3 seconds before powering on, or unplugging the unit for 15 seconds. If the fault still returns after that, check your warranty status in your Whisker account and open a claim with the evidence listed in section 07. Can I buy a Litter-Robot 4 base or wire harness?

Not the way you buy a motor. The Litter-Robot 4 Motor Assembly is an ordinary $55 product page (part LR4-9008), but the main circuit board is not listed for sale on Whisker's website at all — obtaining one goes through a contact form — and a base-level fault is handled as a support case rather than a self-service swap. In practice that means the motor wire connector is worth re-seating yourself, and everything beyond it belongs in a warranty claim.

Can I fix a slipped pinion gear without replacing the whole motor?

No. The Litter-Robot 4's drive pinion is mounted on the motor shaft inside a sealed motor and gearbox assembly, and unlike the Litter-Robot 3, there is no external set screw to retighten it. If the pinion has physically slipped or worn on the shaft, the entire motor assembly has to be replaced as one unit.
