Litter-Robot 4 dumping clean litter into the waste drawer
- Check the fill level — keep litter at 8–10 lbs (3.6–4.5 kg), about 1 gallon by volume, spread flat and below the MAX Fill Line.
- Confirm your litter type — only clay-clumping litter (or fine litter beads/crystals) sifts correctly through the Septum.
- Rule out an accidental Empty press — check the app's cycle history — Empty dumps the whole Globe on purpose.
- Recalibrate the LitterHopper — if you use one — it can overfill the Globe on its own if it isn't calibrated to your litter.
- Clean litter in the waste drawer — unused, un-clumped litter shows up in the drawer after a normal cleaning cycle, not just clumps.
- It looks like the Globe "overflows" — the amount of clean litter lost seems to scale with how full the Globe is.
- Nothing looks broken — the cycle completes normally, the Light Bar stays solid blue, and there's no fault code on the panel or in the app.
Nothing here stops your cat using the box. Fix it when you have a quiet ten minutes.
Why is my Litter-Robot 4 dumping clean litter?
Clean litter ending up in the waste drawer looks alarming, but it traces back to how the Clean cycle physically separates clumps from clean litter. Get any one of three ordinary things wrong, and clean litter rides along with the clumps instead of staying in the Globe.
Overfilling above the MAX Fill Line
The manual states plainly that too much litter "will be expelled into the Waste Drawer during the first few cycles." During the Clean cycle, clumps drop through the Waste Port while clean litter is held behind the Septum — with too much volume in the Globe, some clean litter spills past the Septum along with the clumps.
An incompatible litter type
The sifting system needs clumping litter; litter beads or crystals small enough to pass the screen also work but need periodic changing. Strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping, newspaper-based, pine-based, and absorbent wood-pellet litters do not work — their weight and shape stop the Septum from sifting cleanly.
An accidental Empty cycle
The Empty cycle "empties all of the litter from the Globe into the Waste Drawer for easy disposal," meant for a full litter-bed change or before cleaning the Globe. It only starts "while the Globe is in Home position with the blue Light Bar on," triggered by pressing Empty — a stray press on the panel or in the app dumps everything at once, on purpose, and looks identical to a malfunction if you weren't watching.
In most cases, the steps below resolve this in under 10 minutes.
How to fix it — step by step
Work through these in order — most owners find the answer at step 1 or step 2, and never need to go further.
A sitter who finds clean litter dumped in the drawer usually assumes something broke — when it's almost always one of the four checks above. Give them the printed version so a routine, harmless cause doesn't turn into a worried phone call.

Switching litter types?
GreatLitter is Whisker's own clumping formula, engineered for the Litter-Robot's Septum — no guessing which brand will sift cleanly.
If the issue persists: replacement options
If you've corrected the fill level, confirmed a compatible litter, and ruled out an accidental Empty press, the two products below cover the two things owners get wrong most often — the litter itself, and the liners that affect drawer readings.

For the two less common edge cases — a LitterHopper that keeps overfilling after a first recalibration, and crystal or translucent litter affecting the drawer sensor — see the advanced section below.
Advanced: litterhopper and crystal litter edge cases
Both of the scenarios below can look like the same "clean litter in the drawer" problem but need a different fix.
My LitterHopper keeps adding too much litter
Whisker's own support guidance is direct on this: "If the LitterHopper is adding too much litter, you likely need to recalibrate the optimal litter level." The Hopper tops the Globe up automatically to a target level it learns during setup — if that target was set too high, or your litter is denser or lighter than what it was calibrated with, it keeps overfilling the Globe past the MAX line.
Whisker walks through the exact recalibration steps in the LitterHopper Quick Start Guide, under "reset your optimal litter level." Run it once after any litter brand change — the target level is specific to the litter you calibrated with.
I've fixed the fill level and litter type but it's still happening
In a support exchange about this exact symptom, Whisker's own team named a second possible cause beyond user error: a damaged sifting screen (the Septum). Open the bonnet, remove the Globe, and inspect it inside and out for cracks, warping, or a screen that's come loose or torn — physical damage there can let clean litter fall through with the clumps regardless of fill level or litter type. If you find damage, this is a parts issue rather than a technique fix, and it's worth contacting Whisker support directly, especially if the unit is still under warranty.
Does crystal or translucent litter cause a different problem?
Yes — it's a separate mechanism from plain overfilling. The manual states, in three places (Safety, Litter, and FAQ sections), that "translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy." That means a translucent litter can throw off how full the unit thinks the waste drawer or Globe is, independent of how much litter is actually loaded.
If you're using crystal or translucent litter and seeing DFI warnings on top of clean litter in the drawer, see our guide on Litter-Robot 4 false Drawer Full warnings for the sensor-specific fix.
Frequently asked questions
How much litter should I actually put in my Litter-Robot 4?
Fill to about 8–10 lbs (3.6–4.5 kg), roughly 1 gallon by volume, spread flat and level — and stay below the raised MAX Fill Line molded inside the Globe. Going by weight or volume rather than "filling until it looks full" is what keeps you under the line.
I think I pressed Empty by accident — how do I avoid triggering it again?
Check your app's cycle history to confirm an Empty cycle ran. Empty only starts from the Home position with the blue Light Bar on, so it's hard to trigger truly by accident during normal use — but a curious pet, child, or houseguest pressing buttons on the panel can do it. If you catch it while the unit is paused mid-cycle, press Reset once to cancel it.
Does the type of litter I use really affect this issue?
Yes. The Litter-Robot 4's Septum is built to sift clumping litter specifically. Strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping, newspaper-based, pine-based, and wood-pellet litters don't hold together the way clumping litter does, so their granules get pushed into the waste drawer along with genuine clumps.
Can crystal or translucent litter cause inaccurate level readings on the LR4?
Yes — Whisker's manual confirms translucent or white-colored litter, most often seen in crystal litter, can affect litter level and Drawer Full Indicator accuracy. That's a sensor-reading issue, separate from litter physically spilling past the Septum, so it needs a different check (see section 04).
Could a damaged part be causing this instead of fill level or litter type?
Yes, in some cases. Whisker's support team has identified a damaged sifting screen (Septum) as a second possible cause, separate from overfilling or litter type. If you've already corrected both and litter is still ending up in the drawer, open the bonnet and inspect the Globe for cracks, warping, or damage to the screen itself before assuming it's still a technique issue.
Conclusion
In almost every case, litter ending up in the waste drawer is not a hardware fault — it's the fill line, the litter type, or an accidental Empty press. Work through the checks above before assuming anything is broken. If it keeps happening after ruling all of them out, describe your setup in the comments and we'll help you dig further.
Still not fixed? Here’s what to do next.
Some faults are genuinely hardware, and no amount of cleaning or resetting will clear them. If you’ve worked through everything above and it’s still doing it, stop here rather than taking the unit further apart.
- Go to Whisker (Litter-Robot) directly. If the unit is still under warranty, let them replace the part rather than paying for it yourself — contact Whisker (Litter-Robot) support.
- Tell us what didn’t work. We rewrite bulletins when readers show us a case they don’t cover — compliance@pet-infrastructure.com. Tell us the model, what the lights are doing, and which steps you already tried.
- Ask other owners. r/litterrobot is active and full of people who have had the exact same fault on the exact same model. Search the sub before posting — the answer is often already there.
When to stop and call the manufacturer: if the fix needs the base opened, the motor or control board touched, or any tool beyond a screwdriver — stop. On a unit in this price range, opening it yourself usually voids the warranty, and a warranty repair costs nothing.
