Why cleaning and calibration don't always fix it

Dry-cleaning and forced calibration clear a false "Drawer Full" alert in most cases, since the cause is almost always clay dust scattering the laser beams. When the same alert keeps returning after both steps, the problem has moved from something on the sensor to something in it.

Step 0 — check your warranty before you check anything else

  1. Dry-clean the three sensor openings again. Power off, wipe each opening in the upper bezel with a dry microfiber cloth or dry cotton swab, or clear it with compressed air — never a wet wipe. One missed opening keeps the alert active.
  2. Confirm the unit is on the latest firmware. Check the Whisker app for a pending update before recalibrating; outdated firmware can lock in a reading error that looks just like a failed sensor.
  3. Run the full forced calibration sequence once more. Drawer empty and liner removed, the grey recalibration card (or plain, unpatterned white paper) laid flat in the bottom of the drawer; power the unit off, wait at least 5 seconds, then press Connect → Reset → Connect → Empty → Cycle, one button at a time within 5 seconds of each other. Three different things produce a drawer reading that makes no sense, and only one of them is a $50 part. Sort yours before you order.

Whisker's own installation guide runs to 19 steps: you power the unit off and remove the bonnet, the fence if one is fitted, the globe, the waste drawer and then the bezel, before disconnecting and swapping the small sensor board and reassembling in reverse. The only tool listed is a Phillips-head screwdriver, which places it as a basic-tools job — not a "no tools needed" swap — so set aside the full 20 minutes rather than rushing it. Still flashing blue after replacing the laser board?

A new laser board that doesn't clear the alert points to a wiring or connector issue elsewhere in the unit, which is outside what a home fix can safely address.
